02 V-6 transmission question

Hi there!
I recently purchased a 2002 S-Type with the V-6. It has 74K miles.
There is a two second lag for Drive to engage after being in Park or Reverse.
Left to my own devices, I would suspect a low transmission fluid level, but since I can’t check the fluid level, I’m at a loss. There is no sign of fluid on the ground, but the loss may have occurred prior to my purchase.
Any ideas?
Thank you!
Michael

You can check the fluid level. Here’s how:

Since I wrote that, I have heard that there is a hose fitting on the market which screws into the small center drain plug, by which you can squirt in and suck out fluid from a quart bottle until it is the right level. I have not tried it, not even seen the thing in person. Probably invented by a Ford enthusiast. If anybody tries it I would love to hear how it goes.

The Ford 5R55N did have the delayed shift fault but we were issued a procedure to help the gearbox learn to shift with LESS delay.

It involved shifting in and out of D, N, and R for certain lengths of time in a sequence.
I don’t remember the exact method but I wrote it down about 15 years ago when I worked at the dealer. I probably have it in a box somewhere with all my old Tech Guides, TSBs and other info.

Maybe someone remembers the procedure??

Hi Bob!

Thanks for the update. It’s a relief to know the transmission is not failing.

Thanks again!
