1957 xk140-matching #'s

To John Elmgreen and all:
Received copy of Certificate from Jaguar over the weekend. To be proof-read and returned prior to issue of official certificate.

Model Jaguar 3.4L xk140
Body Style Fixed Head Coupe
Spedifications Left Hand Drive
Vin/Chassis# S815369BW
Body # J6001
Gearbox 9279
Color, exterior Red
Color, Interior Black
Date Built 21 February 1956
Main Distributor Charles Horning, Los Angeles
First Owner Not Recorded
Additional Note Vehicle fitted with automatic gearbox

PROBLEM #1 - Car registered as a 1957 (has been for obviously some time, and concours never discovered it). how do i fix this one, or should I?

PROBLEM #2 - If built Feb. 1956, how could it be fitted with Automatic if there were only 396 Automatics built and not started until October 56.

PROBLEM #3 - Concours docked heavily for non-original color. It is a very orangy-red color, but firewall, jams, etc. all same color. is it possible that it is the right color, or did someone do a body off paint job, and choose to do it in the wrong color. I am quite sure it is not original paint because the body # plate, above the firewall in the engine compartment, just below the windscreen is painted over, but the J6001 is still legible.

In the hope this may help you pin your dates down, my 1956 140MC FHC
w/Auto was built and left the UK in time to be registered late in '56.
Body # J6387, Chassis # 815666BW, Engine #7905, Auto # 11116.
Best regards
Klaus

Its very possible that the orange-red color is correct. Mine was painted
back to the orginial color and some people have mistaken(called) it as an
orange car. I believe that the color is close to the carmen red used on
E-types. A LOT of people that I know have added a little bit of “red” to the
orginial paint when respraying. Then they call that the orginial color. That
should be noted in your book, John E., as this has been a very common
pratice. I may still have a small paint chip off of my car that is the
orginial factory paint.

Kevin,

The reference to “Charles Horning” in your message should read “Charles
Hornburg”. If it’s an error in the Certificate, you may wish to make the
correction. Hornburg is still in business in LA.
