And if they are getting bigger you will notice it, and if the engine becomes extremely quiet in the top end then check the clearance!!
I had slight changes. But I havenāt bought anything so it was all old (original sounds better) parts that may settle in to each other a little more. One valve is tapping slightly but not at all alarming.
If just one clearance goes down itāll be hard to pick outā¦
A mechanics stethoscope would help to identify the culprit.
If one closes up and the others still rattle happily you wouldnāt think about trying a stethoscope in the first place
Nah just remove the cam covers and feeler gauge them.
Reading other recent posts on the subject (and playing devilās advocate) it seems tighter gaps can be louder due to the flat side of the cam slapping follower over itās whole length, rather than just near the pointed end. On that basis larger gaps would have little effect on sound, the only result being that the contact point on the cam is later, affecting only timing. Thereās a discussion on parabolic cams as fitted to XJās running quiter with larger gaps. Whole new can of worms!
Shouldnāt that be cam of worms !
