The journey starts on my rebuild of a 1966 Series 1 4.2 FHC 2+2 - any Top Tips from the Forum and comments on new replacements versus reconditioned and original parts. I’m tackling the seats and interior first then going through everything by making huge Excel spread sheets of parts required. Speaking to others the chrome and other parts seem inferior to OEM parts.
I always favor NOS or restored original except in the obvious cases where it is impractical (exhaust system, hoses, shocks & tires come to mind).
Is it me or does that pile of stuff actually resemble the shape of a FHC?
Just finished restoring a '69 OTS. If the budget allows best quality aftermarket or has close to OEM as possible, there is less chance of disappointment. But, I have had lousy quality in so-called OEM and good quality aftermarket. With respect to chrome buying new, if it is available, is probably less costly than re-chroming. Overall, the actual function of the part needs to be considered. One final comment. Not sure if the seats and interior are the best places to start. I’m assuming everything else is more or less OK.
IF you choose to purchase your chrome, DO NOT BUY from the supplier south of San Diego.
PM me for deeper details.
Well its over all rebuilt and driving now, few little final touches to complete…many thanks for the advice guys!
Well done that man! That was quick.
Looks like you kept it LHD? I mostly did that when in the UK because euro trips were so much nicer. Hope you particularly wanted an auto, otherwise it miht have been an ideal time to fit a standard 4-speed, which is cheaper than a 5 but really wakes the car up.
Thanks Peter car already goes like a rocket but I bought the car as a project looking for European market to buy it. The auto box works well, fully refurbished, and this car will suit a cruiser not a bruiser driver it!! lol…its been fully refurbished with all new parts and ready to go. few little jobs I am doing now buy hey its an E Type there will always be tinkering!! Cheers Kevin
