In Nov.96 we purchased a used 1990 Jaguar XJ40, 95,000 miles, the car
was in excellent condition, everything worked OK, I live in Ohio. In
Dec.96 while in Florida the air conditioner didn’t work, I checked the
hoses, belts & wires but didn’t see anything unusual, the next day the
AC started working correctly. Feb.97 back in Ohio the heater would not
work only COLD air. I took apart the center console/radio/climate
control unit, looking for a short in the wiring or something. While
apart I plugged everything in, started the car and the heater started
working. I moved the temp. control to cool and the AC worked. I didn’t
find anything wrong, I put it back together and it’s been working ever

enough.
Now Sep.97 the AC just stopped working. The blower/fan works but no
cold air. The clutch on the compressor is not turning. I checked the
wires going to the compressor for voltage, there is 11.78 volts, if I
turn the blower/fan off or touch the ECON button there is 0 volts. I’m
getting voltage to the compressor. With the wires removed from the

nothing. No reading at all.
Is their a fuse or coil in the compressor that may be shorted? Is their
an electrical component I can replace in the compressor, or do I have
to replace the whole compressor?
There is a thermal fuse in compressor. It should blow if compressor gets
overheated. (And it should not over heat unless something else is
wrong). However, assuming your problem is intermittent this can’t be
problem. Check for bad contacts and wires.
Sounds like an A/C dealer job. Unless other list members can grope
further?

Bob, the wires go to the magnetic clutch. The current flowing through
the wires in the clutch causes a magnetic field to be generated.
Its unusual that a magnetic clutch goes bad.
The most common problem is caused by the micro switch on the fan
speed control knob.
I would inspect the wires from the compressor to the connector
(and in the connector) very carefully.
I guess you measured the voltage ACROSS the wires…not to ground.
You can also try putting 12 volts from the battery and ground from
the battery across the connection to the clutch and see if the clutch
pulls in.
The big black round connectors come apart also…there are rubber
gaskets and the actual connectors…I would check the connections
from the wires to the pins.
I would think you could get the clutch seperate from the whole
compressor but I would check it out real close before ordering parts.
Let us know what you find…
