1982 rear door locks where is the relay

can’t get the doors or trunk open

Is it an SIII or a XJ40?
If the later better post you question at the XJ40 section, very different electrics form the previous XJ.

All the best and welcome.

I’m new at this , the car is a XJ6 Series III

OK, there are no relays for the locks on the SIII, only solenoids.
Did you check the fuse?
The driver’s door solenoid is different from the others, it doesn’t lock or unlock but it gives the signal to the other solenoids to do so, and If nothing works it would be the prime suspect.
If some work but some don’t, then the problem is either the wiring, either the solenoids themselves.

The early versions used solenoids, Aristides - which need relays, under the rear seat shelf. Later models, from 83(?), used Kiekert motors - which do not use relays…

James,

something is wrong here: either the car is from 1992 or it is an XJ6 Series III, but not both. Series III cars were indeed built until 1991 and even sold until 1992, but only in 12 cylinder versions. The Series III XJ6 ended in 1986/87 to be superseded by the XJ6 codenamed XJ40 and the XJ6 codenamed X300. If 1992 is correct it would be an XJ40.

Maybe the “1992” it the thread headline is a typo - then it should be corrected. If not, you’re on the wrong list, I’m afraid.

Good luck

The xj40, and later(?) used the Kiekert motors, Jochen - no relays…

As a curio; the Kiekerts were introduced on late xj6/12, either as a preparation for the xj40 - or simply because they were available due to the delay in the xj40 production? And further, while the xj set-up was for central locking only; the xj40 used a combined motor/controller in the driver’s door - to enable remote lock/unlock…

. I;m afraid we have a typo, the car is a 1982 XJ6. sorry for the confusion.

In which case you have the solenoids, James - and the relays…

Look for the relays behind the RH and LH A-pillar kick panel. But explain ‘cannot get the doors or trunk open’ - it’s more to this than meets the eye…

You are locked out of the car and can’t get in? You may need the services of a “lock out” specialist with a slim-jim or similar tool

When you turn the key in the door lock, what happens? Does it feel very loose, like it is disconnected?

Cheers

On the XJ-S, you just remove the door mirror. Does the saloon not have a similar easy way to break in?

Hmmmm. I dunno! Never had to break in !

The mirror is virtually the same as the XJS and thus easily removable from the outside. In my mind’s eye I don’t see any access to the lock rods (or anything else) via the mirror hole.

Worth a try, tho

On the XJ-S, the lock/unlock flapper is right there.

I’m back; to be more explicit, the back doors wont open nor will the trunk. When inserting the key in the front doors and turning I can hear clicking from inside the back doors but the handles wont pull out. The windows will not operate either.Just received the car back from a repair shop where extensive work was performed .Don;t know if something was changed there. Thanks.

James,

First of all, I’ve changed the tittle of the thread to the correct year of your car.

A multimeter and the diagram are your friends here.
Check if you get power/ground on the fuses, relays, solenoids and so on…
As for the windows it could very well be the switches themselves.
What kind of extensive work was done?

There are ‘kiddilocks’ on the rear doors, James, which may have been set - disabling the internal handle…

The central locking system should still unlock them, and unlocked; the outside handles should work. But the central locking may have failed ‘locked’ - to test; lock the front passenger door and use the drivers door key and the passenger door should unlock. If it does not; the central locking has failed - to be addressed…

The boot will not open by the central locking - a security feature, but it should indeed open with the key. If the key will not open the boot; you have a separate problem…

So…?

James,

when I got my car “new” the central locking worked, but the rear right door wouldn’t open. It turned out that the padding of the surround to the lock paddle obstructed the way of the paddle. If you notice clicking sounds from the rear doors the electrickery seems to be o.k.

Good luck
