I have a 2002 Vanden Plas, 4 liter V8, not supercharged, with 50K miles, and has always run flawlessly. This morning it cranked and had no start. I placed a gauge on the fuel rail, it read 40lbs when cranking and remained about 37lbs when the key is off. I back probed an injector with a light and received a flash when the injector appeared to fire. There is a bit of a smell of gas in the exhaust tips.
I pulled a plug and it appears somewhat wet. I placed a spark testing light between the plug and coil pack and did get a flash when cranking.
No codes on the reader except P1000.
So what next? Crank Position sensor, cam position sensor? (where are these located, and can they be tested) The VIN number of this engine indicates it has the “better” or later timing belt setup.
Have you tried flooring the accelerator pedal? If the SP is wet you might have flooded the engine, flooring the accelerator while cranking shuts off the injector pulse, if it is flooded it can take a while to clear and fire.
Do not floor. The accelerator as WOT cuts off the fuel to prevent flooding.
Check if the Tachometer reads about 250 whilst cranking, if not suspect CKPS.
If the engine spins freely as opposed to cranks wash down may have caused Linda of compression. Try a squirt of oil in each bore before cranking again.
Which is precisely why I said to floor the pedal, if the engine is flooded then the last thing needed is more fuel in the bores.
And James, the engine does not have a timing belt, you are referring to the timing chain tensioners.
I appreciate the responses. So here is what has happened since my original post. I replace the KPS because it was cheap and easy to do, but still no start. I then tested the power side wire of the injector, and it was good. I tested the computer side ground pulse and found it was good. I was stumped. I then wondered if the inject and spark appears to be happening in sync. I connected test lights to both and cranked, the spark and inject were firing at nearly the same time but no start. WTF? I figure I would then open the air cleaner and give it a shot of ether. No start. Did a rodent somehow block the air intake? I removed the filter, which means disconnection of the MFA sensor, to completely open the top of the air box. I reconnected the MFA after opening the air box. I cranked and it started right up. Running like a champ again, but I am stumped at what caused it. By the way, on my car, when cranking the tack does not move but my cheap scan tool did show the rpm jump to about 130, just an FYI. Also, as a test, when I had the injector setup with a test light, the injector completely shut off with a WOT, just an FYI.
