3.5L SS100 HV5 carbs

Hi all,
Does anyone know for sure what size the HV5 carbs were originally on the 3.5L SS100?
As reported previously by Roger W, one would expect HV5 carbs to be 1-1/2", however I’ve seen 1-5/8" documented. And my HV5s measure up at 1-5/8". While we’re about it, what needles are people using in their HV5s? My car came with RLS needles which are considerably richer than any specified by SU for 3.5L cars with H4 carbs.

My references say an HV5 SU has an 1-5/8" throttle-diameter, but the HV size codings are not strictly ordered in 1/8" increments as were the later H and HD series SUs.
HV4 are 1-3/8" throttle diameter, HV3 are 1-1/4", HV2 are 1-1/8" and HV1 are 1".

And I seem to recall, but cannot find details, that air-intake diameter is not same as throttle-diameter.

Roger

SU Workshop Manual, Carburetters and Electric Fuel Pumps, chart on pagine A.14 lists HV.5 as having 1 5/8 inch (41.27 mm) Throttle Diameter with Max. Capacity 75 B.H.P.
