340 - Removing the head

Hello,

I’m helping an elderly friend remove the head from his 340. #6 has zero compression, and exhaust valve clearance of about 40 thou.

On XJ’s I’m more familiar with, the intake would be removed complete before lifting the head.
On this car, space is tight. Should I remove the head with intake?

Thanks,

Rob

Bonnet off / Intake & carbs off last time I did - was a while ago though.

As I recall, the last time I took the head off I left the intake and exhaust manifolds attached and lifted the entire assembly. It’s much easier to access the underside manifold nuts when the head is on the bench.

you don’t need to take the inlet manifold off. a lot of what you have to do is dependent on how free the head is when you come to lift it off. if you need to help it with small bottle jacks you will require more access.

Thank you all for responding; and sorry for the delay thanking you.

I’ll let you know how it goes,

Rob

Print a copy out for the shop, and another for the desk. By the time they are thoroughly grubby you’ll have memorized it.
