'81 XJ-S Coats of paint

Restoring an '81 XJ-S and decided to do things properly from the start. Was tempted to give the body a good sand down but have chosen the paint remover path so then l can be 95% sure of finding every spot of rust. Started with the rear end/boot and was suprised at the number of coats…undercoat, paint, undercoat, paint. Have P O’s added a coat or two or is this factory finish?
Cheers.

Hi Rich,

What you’re seeing is absolutely normal. Actually you shall consider yourself lucky. Could be much worst - you could get “weekend shift” example - worn condoms under the footwell’s mat, some extra/never assembled parts under rear sofa too many drilled holes…
Anyway - to understand this you need to look at GD&T on the beginning of 80s, with parts in question being manufactured on the jigs and fixtures, between the stations. Imagine yourself Coventry, UK, end of the shift on the horizon. Production Manager starting his walk through the dhop floor, taking closer look at all the components with red labels attached (rejects), then pulling them off with short sentence thrown at operator “it will be alright” or “that can go”. Imagine yourself extensive time required to build each XJS due to “UTA” rejects (unable to assemble) and parts being exchaned within the stores, spare parts, UTA parts, salvaged parts… No we have Michael working part-time in factory as his full-time job is a postman. Michael takes job card delivered to him, however standard, not rework (rework job cards are no-good and ruining KPIs). He’s responsible for base cost, but the parts already has finished coating sanded down slightly by apprentice. What would Michael do…
