need help installing new starter on a 94 xj12 car turned over but would not rev and starter made a series of clicking noises. I know starter needs adjusting but not sure how to do it.
First of all, check the charge of the battery.
Was it a click click click type of sound or a single click when you tried to start it?
Try jumping the starter relay and see what happens.(Make sure it is in park).
When I replaced the starter on my 94 XJS V12, I could see no way to adjust the starter except for the possibility of adding shims, but then you would have less of the gear engaging.

Make sure all electrical contacts are clean and tight.As had already been said, if it’s a series of clicks, more than like a solenoid problem. If it clicks only once and may be more pronounced, then an engagement problem more likely. I suppose you’re sure it’s the correct starter? You shouldn’t need to adjust it in any way if it’s the correct one!
