Alternator fan removal help needed

I need to replace the alternator on my 84 XJS. I got it off. I’m going to pick up a new one from autozone but haven’t yet.

The description says I need to keep my existing pulley and fan before returning the core. I got the pulley off and under it on top of the fan it looks like it has another nut but there is a key in it. I assume I can’t turn the nut without removing the key but I can’t seem to find anyway to extract the key. Am I correct in assuming it needs to be removed first? I can’t turn the nut without turning the shaft. I was able to get the pulley nut off with an impact wrench but can’t do the same with the fan nut without removing the key. Maybe it just lifts up but when I hold it by the fan and tap on the spindle it doesn’t come loose.

I solved it myself. Tapped a chisel under the bottom edge of the retainer (was not a threaded nut). and worked myself around it, gradually lifting it enough to then get a screwdriver under it and work around the diameter the same way, gradually prying it up and off. It was a royal pain. The retainer looks like it should be a permanent part of the pulley but they separated

Mission accomplished!

I think I will replace the pulley with one like this. The bottom part containing the key slot is the part that separated from my pulley. I could have just used a pulley puller if they wouldn’t have separated. I pounded it back into the pulley but I don’t think I’m supposed to have to do that.

Remember to replace that Lucas alt with a Marelli alt for a Range Rover. Newer tech, more amps, fits same mounts.

Well, I already had picked up an 80w replacement from local O’Reilly Auto Parts store that looked like it was the exact same model for about $109 with tax. They do offer a lifetime warranty so I can get a free swap it if it ever fails again.

Although it was a pain to take off the blower and bracket to get to it. And I think that last person that replaced the belt put too short of a belt on it. Could not get it on even with the blower all the way up. Ended up putting belt around the blower pulley with the pulley off and attaching the pulley with the belt around it. Even then had to stretch it with a pry bar to line up the holes. I don’t think it’s supposed to be that tight. Hardly had to screw the blower tightener rod any to get to the final position.
