Alternator Removal Tip

Hello All,

Just wanted to post an alternative XJ6 alternator removal method.

I was working on a customer car (have a lift obviously), and was getting ready to lower the sway bar, when the bolts started getting fussy, as in, not moving even with Milwaukee persuasion. :unamused::woozy_face:

Took a lunch break, went back determined to figure out this infamous jigsaw puzzle, while maintaining a bottom out R&R and I cracked it:

1: car in the air or on jack stands
2: remove front pan under the radiator
3: undo the transmission cooler tube fasteners
4: undo the four oil cooler straps on the subframe

Here is where we derail from the usual

5: before loosening the adjuster, zip the pulley nut off with an open-end, stick a screwdriver in the fan blades to give you leverage.

6: remove (completely) the adjuster assembly

7: pop the belt off / slide the pulley and the fan off of the shaft.

8: undo the mounting bolt closest to the radiator

9: swing the alternator up and undo the back bolt

10: the alternator is now “free” and sitting on the subframe.

11: spin the alternator to a point to remove the electrical connections

12: now, for the Coup de grâce - once the electrical is removed, spin the alternator around and carefully remove the back plastic cover (there are two screws holding it on in the center, and possibly the electrical connection posts, depending on rebuild of your alternator).

13: very carefully, as to not damage the diodes and the voltage regulator (which would be hard honestly), rotate the alternator ears while pivoting the unit down and out. The removal of the plastic cover / pulley and fan, give you the perfect amount of space to pop that dude outta there.

No sway bar removal nor additional bits to deal with.

As they say, installation is the reverse procedure.

Hopefully this helps some deserving soul and it takes the job down to a fairly quick procedure.
