This is the first time I’ve read of a failure of the transmission
on the xj40.
How common is trans failure on the xj40?
Anyone know?

For what it’s worth: Just thought I’d pass this along in answer to
Brett’s question. I asked this very question to a master techician
who’s been specializing in Jaguar repair for years.
(paraphrasing) " …properly serviced, these transmissions are
practically indestructable …and I rarely see any problems in 89’s and
up. In fact, I’ve seen some with 250K miles and even up to 400K."
Of course, the rest of the car has got to hang in there too!
