AW: [xj] '86 SIII (US) helicoil problem

Good solution. I’d change one thing though. Use a brass bolt, not stainless. Stainless is odd stuff. Its only ‘stainless’ up to about 500 degrees (depending on nickel content, yadda, yadda) after which it rots faster than ordinary steel.

Cheers,

Wilson.

Peter,

You’re in luck, you can rethread the hole for a larger bolt. The tap I bought
for this (because I thought the helicoil was a kludge the PO had used) is made
by Vermont American, I believe, and it’s designated “1/8 pipe LM D9”, for a
3/8-28 bolt. I got it at Orchard Supply. Use use plenty of high-temp grease
(as for disc brakes) after you clean out the new threads. See if you can get
a stainless bolt for both holes. Also, use large brass/stainless washers
between the manifold and the heat shield before bolting it back on. This
prevents some high-frequency rattles. Brass/stainless washers under the bolt
heads too.

By the way, I wire brushed and sprayed the heat shield with high-temp aluminum
paint and it looks great – nice patina, not flakey.

HELP!

I was ‘adjusting’ the exhaust manifold heat shield to try and stop it
from rattling. The helicoil (~15mm) for the larger of the two manifold
bolts came out, damaged.

I can’t find a helicoil that size, nor a tool. The car would seem to be
undrivable until I can fix this. Suggestions?

And whatever we use, use plenty of high-temp lubricant!
