Axle/gearbox ratio

I’ve just got a 1968 Daimler 250 auto (BW35 I guess) and I’m a bit puzzled about the gearing.

I can’t detect more than one gear change from rest, and I have tried with the selector lever in D2 and D1.

Also, when cruising at about 50mph I get 2800 indicated on the rev counter, which I think is higher than it should be.

I don’t know much about this car yet so any information anyone can provide would be very useful.

I know this is an old thread and I wonder if you resolved this? I ran a V8-250 for many years, in many ways it was a nicer car to drive, in terms of handling and seat comfort, than the 3.4 Mk 2 I now use.

When the 2.5 became theV8-250 they put a slightly higher axle ratio in it. It used to be 4.55 but the V8-250 got 4.27:1 for the auto versions for more relaxed motorway cruising and economy. I recall about 2500 at 50 mph on the 4.27:1 ratio. But there should be a gear ratio chart in the owners manual. Of course tyre size will affect the actual speed, I used to use the original tyre size.

I’m away from home at the moment so i can’t take a copy of the page in the workshop manual, and I’m not 100% sure it’s the right one for my car anyway - a 1968 V8-250

I get about 55 mph at about 3000 rpm. It varies a bit depending mainly on temperature and as I’ve had the gearbox checked over by a specialist and the filters and fluid renewed there shouldn’t be any slippage, but the revs still seem a bit high. I’ve got a better ratio diff to fit one day but it’s not a 10 minute job so it’s not at the top of the list.
I solved the lack of gear shifts - just needed the shift cable adjusting.

According to my book, the 4.27 ratio gives 18.0 mph\1000 rpm, as fitted to 2.4, so same tyres as V8 250. 3k rpm = 54mph.
