Bell housing bung / plug?

Am I missing something? A bung in the bell housing? This view of course from above.

I can’t tell from the picture what model you have, but XK120, XK140 and Mark VII with manual gearbox have an aperture there for seeing the TDC timing mark on the flywheel.

My '62 E Type has same. No bung to my knowledge there or the hole underneath. Per Rob and can also see the engine number through there as well.

There should be a cover underneath , to cover the timing mark hole , P no C11910 , not sure if its on all gearboxes ,
I would plug it up

Not sure if this is factory !

Just checked my parts book. Consider myself corrected - indeed the bottom hole has a “cover” C11910, but nothing for the top. At some stage in the past I put a neat fitting grommet in the bottom hole - less concerned about the top one. Paul

I would be more concerned about the top one Paul , it’s sod’s law your drop a small part one day and it will go down that hole

Good point, well made - a bung hunting we go.
