The standard spring in the HD8 on the E Type is the 4.5 oz blue/black, which is quite thin and light. In some of the Healey’s and Aston’s with the HD8’s they use the much thick and heavier 11.25 oz Red/Green spring.
Has anyone tried these damper springs and what is the opinion in relation to thicker damper oil ?
When I converted my xj6 to hd8’s from strombergs I was having a problem with it running lean. Upon checking the specs for hd8’s in that application I discovered that a heavier spring was specified. Sorry I do not remember which color-it was over 20 years ago. Changing to the heavier spring solved the problem immediately. As a trial you can simulate a heavier spring by placing washers under where the spring sits. It is a simple inexpensive way to determine if a heavier spring will help.
