Will older cam covers - (i.e. polished ) fit my newer 7L head? My current stock set needs refurb so I’m considering options. At the back there is a cutout for a rubber seal.

No, it will not fit direct.
I have a later XJ6 s2 head on my MK1.
The problem is you need the most rear camshaft cap from the intake side.
As there is a big gap there suited for the tach generator of the older cars.
The cutout rubber seal is way to small.
Dang. Oh well, factory stock will continue to do fine.
