Can someone help me identify this electrical component?

Hello, I’m trying to determine what an electrical component is used for on my 86 xj6. It’s a canaster looking object tucked inside the fender by the battery. I’m attaching a photo.

Yep, that’s what it is. My mind assumed the motor would be in the “traditional” place. Thanks for the help.
