SOP on older race engines: period-correct plugs had far less tolerance in heat range.

The pads are removable, as you can kind of see on Chuck’s at the rear. I don’t use them on the front either, preferring to use the wood blocks, placed just behind the jack points. It’s very stable. I assume Chuck uses the pads because it would be more level, though it might also have something to do with the shorter wheelbase. Again, sorry I can’t send some pics.
