Fred,
Does it have the original differential?
I am courious…do all the differentials wear out at about 80,000
miles, or was mine an oddity…does anyone get a 150,000 miles
out of a differential, and still have it quiet…???

Hmmmmmm… It has about 95K right now. When I bought it, I think it was
86K.

Brett,

My cat has 77k and counting, no sign of leaks, vibrations, rumbles or squeaks or squeals.

PS Brett, you would be proud of me. Thanks to Stefan Roundy, my cat now has an honest to
goodness Jaguar antenna, that goes up and down and everything. I guess I can now fess up that I
have been driving around with one of those “Rubber Ducky” replacement things that was on it when
I bought it. Jaguar and SICP both wanted $350 plus for a replacement. Stefan treated me MUCH
MUCH better than that.

Hi Don!
What happened to the original in trunk part of the antenna?
Did the po remove the whole thing?
I always wondered why the Jaguar has a power antenna…my wifes
car has one also…why not just put an antenna that does not
go up and down on the car?..I don’t know why its so important
for the antenna to go away…
I think its silly to have the antenna going up and down as you
start the car(antenna up) put a tape in…(antenna down), oops
wrong tape(antenna up) right tape (antenna down).
I think if my antenna broke, I would just refit a regular,
indestructible fixed antenna for about $10.00.
Is there a reason for the power antenna?
Brett

Hi, Brett!

I think power antennas were invented by the producers of luxury

cars like Jaguar, BMW, Mercedes, … in order to prevent envious people
from breaking the antennas.

In Germany they really became popular when the punk movement was

en vogue and the differences in social class were most obvious in the
big cities.

It was a popular game for many of the young and unemployed to go

around, steal leapers and mercedes stars and break the antenna. With
power antennas, you could at least prevent the antenna from being
broken.

I know, this sounds ridiculous to Americans who are used to an

entirely different level of criminality (hell, here probably the whole
car would be stolen and end up in a confrontation with a huge tree…),
but I feel this was why power antennas were introduced in Europe.

I might be wrong, though. Just thought another valid reason

might be that all those people with manual antennas forgot to pull them
out before getting into the car, they got annoyed about having to stop
again in order to be able to listen to the radio - and with enough
complaints about this inconvenience arriving car producers started
putting electrical antennae into the cars.

Cheers,

Martin

Martin,
You may be right…
Crime over here is not quite what you may read or see on tv…
In 20 years of car ownership, I have never had anything done to
any of my cars, my wife had a window broken at a train station,
but I think it was a scam run by the police of the place…
They break the window, then they say they have to have the car
towed off the lot for safe keeping…so you get a bill for towing
$100.00 and storage over the weekend($50.00), as they do it Friday nite,
and you cant get a release from the police until monday morning.
I have never been shot, stabbed, mugged, raped or burglarized, and don’t
normally carry a gun or large knife.

The antennas I was thinking of are almost as big as the Jaguar
antenna, but do not collapse…they are one piece, and almost
un breakable…I think you could bend it if you really tried…
Brett

Hi,

The reason that Jag fit automatic aerials (like many cars in Europe), is
threefold.

We need three wavebands (LW/MW/FM), and short stubby nasty looking
rubberised aerials provide lousy reception.

Secondly have you ever tried a carwash this side of the pond?, you really
need retractable mirrors as well !!!.

Thirdly, auto damage theft etc is far higher over here (alas), and kids
love to rip any appendage off a vehicle. If mirrors weren’t required by law
we wouldnt fit them anymore.

Like most things, if the Jag aerial shaft is regularily lubricated (at
least monthly), they don’t cause problems I always use water pump grease.

regards

Hi Don!
What happened to the original in trunk part of the antenna?

When I bought it, there was a non-working aftermarket up & down antenna. I let the dealer talk
me into replacing it with a “rubber ducky” flexible fixed antenna. When I went to Jaguar
events, I was always embarrassed by the looks. (Deep down, I also was sure you would dispprove
of the non-Jaguarishness of it!) Somebody cut off the end of the coax and spliced it to an end
that fit the “rubber ducky”.

Did the po remove the whole thing?

If you’re going to be a snob, why not go all the way with something like an automatic “go-up-
and-down” antenna? (Let’s face it, most of us are just a little bit snobbish, or why have a
jaguar?)

…my wifes

Two non-snob appeal reasons come to mind – car washes (I know, Cats aren’t supposed to go in
them.) and vandals.

Now I’m devastated; half the reason I did it is because I felt your distant disapproval of what
I had. Whether you like it or not, you set the standard for most of us.

Is there a reason for the power antenna?

Sure, so Brett will approve!

I have been shot at, by a guy that later committed a murder. In one location where I lived, 10

also had my daughter’s new Mustang stolen from the driveway with the yard light on and alarm

Don,
I certainly approve of the new antenna…don’t get me wrong…
I just wondered why Jaguar did not go with a diversity system,
with antennas built in the windows…a stealth setup, that would
work well…or a gold plated fixed antenna…

I am sure your antenna looks much better than the rubber one…

To bad you fixed your back shocks…then you could have had the
antenna going up and down in sync with the back bouncing up and
down…wire it into the ride leveling circuit…
maybe set it up like the guys with the hydraulic shocks
that make the car jump around…the whole thing would be jumping!

Just kidding!

I’m just having new tires fitted, the P6000 recommended by Dave and Patsy.
The guy says he will check my alignment for free (I think its OK) and will
charge $70 if it needs adjustment.
I remember this being discussed before, can someone remind me if this can
only be done buy a Jag dealer,
