Changing engine and trans. oils

when changing the engine and trans. oils i usually have the front of the car up on a set of ramps for ease of getting at. is this ok or should i have the rear on axle stands to keep the car level.

It’s fine for the gearbox, as the drain is at the rear I think.

You would get more dirty oil out the engine if it was level

I like to keep it level so trans oil doesn’t run out the rear of pan when loosening and engine oil drains out completely.

about how much oil will come out of the gearbox?

Only what’s sitting in oil pan, about 3 /4 litres,if you keep it level when removing, minimal spillage, lay out newspaper to catch what does spill.:+1::blush:

The supercharged merc gearbox has a drain plug. Thought ZF would too.

You can get more out the gearbox in other ways if you wish.
Is it a weekend Car?

yes mainly weekends but usually longish trips, 200-300 klms.

I drained the gearbox from the drain plug.

I then Disconnected the gearbox cooler pipe at the front.
Left it for a week for gravity to drain oil down and got another 2 litres out the bottom

sounds the way to go, thanks.

They used a GM box on X300 XJR’s, the drain plug is on the left side and you can expect less than 4 litres to drain out.

That is the problem having a forum coving 3 or more models years!

Each XJR having a different manufacture for the gearbox!

Do we know what year/country the OP is in?
