[collectibles] 1954 Le Mans Nockolds poster on eBay

Anyone who comes across the above on eBay, be warned that as
well as the damage mentioned and visible in the photo, it is
VERY faded, probably from sitting in sunlight on the wall

You can see a pic of my own copy (which is in near mint
condition) here:
http://www.jag-lovers.org/collectibles/posters.html
(large pic selectable further down page)

From that you’ll see how much it is faded.

It is a rare poster - but Lynx did some good repros in the
early '90s (date from memory) and there are much more modern
ones as well around. If the vendor’s provenance is correct then
personally (and I looked at another mounted on linen in a
similar sort of condition locally about a week ago) it’s
probably not worth more than maybe US$200 max unless you are
determined to get your hands on it (Ian - any opinions?) and
can’t wait for a better one.

If it was in very good condition then maybe $1200 upwards and
even higher with some bidding competition. Could be interesting
to watch near the end (Feb-24-01 12:36:47 PST).

“the poster is made from a very thick fiberboard”. Well it
wasn’t when it left the factory! The original cartridge paper
has presumably been mounted on this at some point in its life
which won’t have done anything to enhance it.

But, it is on eBay and if anyone who hasn’t seen one before
wants to chase it then…

I would agree with Tony’s comments about value. This highlights the classic
dilemma of buying unseen through an operation like e-bay. Unless there is a
good and effective money-back guarantee in place, you can end up spending
good money on a below-par item.

The paper issue is also important. If it has been printed directly onto
fiberboard, then it is definitely not an original. Even originals were not
printed on high-quality paper - these showroom posters were only intended to
be on the wall until the next one was issued. If an original has been
mounted on fiberboard, then there will be another set of issues about the
adhesive used - will it brown and show through the paper in time? Will it
damage the paper? Could this, in effect, be the “water damage” which the
vendor mentions? and so on.

Much also depends on the seller’s experience and knowledge. An item may be
described in all good faith. However, if it is rare and the seller has
only seen one or two examples, then they may not be able to form a really
effective judgement on relative condition. And condition is always relative;
Fine - relative to what? Good - relative to what? etc.

Hope that helps.

I bought a copy from John Kluge about five years back…I think it was all
of $15. Looks nice on the wall, and other than a few fanatics, nobody can
tell it from the original. It would be a little crazy to spend so much
money on something that’s so badly damaged.

Well someone out there (hopefully) wasn’t on this list! The
poster has already sold via the new eBay ‘Buy it now’ option at
$350.00 to an AOL user.

Yes, I have one of John’s repros as well. He dropped a couple
off here during one of his previous visits to me! He’s not on
this list but he has a web site if anyone is interested and
wants one of these posters (they are very nice and well worth
the few dollars they cost):
