[collectibles] Jag badge, cap?

Hi, I found a Jaguar cap, badge. Initially, I thought it was for a
gas tank, but now I’m wondering. It has a Licence for a
mechanically propelled car on the inside from 1958. When this is
lifted, it has instruction on how to mount the cap on your
windscreen glass. It is Raydyot. Any ideas?–

Hello sooz,

It’s a UK Road Licence (Tax) holder. It mounts on to the inside of the
windscreen as you’ve seen - a passing policeman could then (as they do
now although it’s generally traffic wardens that eagerly do so these days)
verify that you’d paid your annual tax and report you for a hefty fine if
not.

They come in many designs, some quite exotic from specific garages. Some
used adhesive, many fitted using suction (known as barnacle holders) from
a surrounding rubber mount that is clamped on the glass by turning a
centrally mounted knob that depressurises the contained air when turned.

Depending on condition, type and who wants it, it will be worth a few tens
of pounds or a lot more for better ones.

The Raydyot ones are also available reproduced these days quite cheaply. I
think they originally came in both adhesive and barnacle types.

There’s a Raydyot SS Cars one here plus another SS Cars one:

Here’s a later more exotic Barnacle type:

For more on our road tax system and its history, there’s a good site here
with loads of example discs:

Thanks so much for the info! That’s very helpful. I wonder if I
should list the tax holder on this forum or another?–
