[collectibles] Jaguar desk phone

Does anyone know anything about this?

I have not seen one before and looks quite cool. One has just been
auctioned in Australia too so I wonder where they originally came
from.

Richard,
I have one of these phones. I found it several years ago in
an antique store in Decatur, GA. I had it in use for a while, but
my significant other couldn’t stand it because the ring was too
loud for her (I think she really just thought it too tacky), but I
loved it. I have no idea how old these things are (my guess is
70’s). I think I gave $15 for it at the time. The LED’s in the
eyes are pretty cool as well.

Regards,–
Cas

I received the following reply from the JDHT’s Executive
Director some years ago after I acquired one and asked the
same questions:==

It’s an official piece! It was licensed by the Jaguar
Collection in the mid-90’s in order to establish trademark
use in the field of telecommunications. We were able to
head off other unauthorised use on the strength of it.

The phone was made in the Far East but the original
licence was done with a US company.

The Board’s reaction to the product was interesting.
Initially a bit sniffy (this was pre-new Jag generation), it
rapidly became a question of where do I get one! However, I
believe the device was only homologated for use in the USA
and the Far East, and not in the UK.
Hence, I believe it is illegal to use it in the UK.

==

Hope that helps you!

You got a very good deal, Cas. Mine cost me $43 on eBay after I’d
let a few get away. It sits on the top of my roll top computer
desk with the 1:18 E-type and MK2 diecasts. Love the red eyes.–
