Ian Cooling and myself have been publishing the most
comprehensive ever history of the Jaguar mascot in Classic Jaguar
World/Jaguar World Monthly with usually four pages per part.

Part 5 covering the latest ‘safety’ mascots is in the current
(August 2002) issue of Jaguar World Monthly and Part 6 will deal
with the so called ‘Prince Michael’ pre-war mascot. We’ll then be
moving on to the unofficial mascots that have appeared over the
years.

Part One - The origins of the leaper 1936 - 1938
Part Two - Versions 1 and 2 1938 - 1971
Part Three - The Mk VII Motif and Version 3 1960 - 1971
Part Four - Introduction of the The Safety Mascots 1990 - 1995

There is no website as such (yet) but you can find scans of the
first four parts (reproduced with permission) on the Jag-lovers
site at:

imagine my surprise as I followed the link to these. not only are
these beautifully photographed but yourself and ian have done
spectacular research! plus, my entire inquiry, although I did not
state it, was directed toward the mark VII ‘mascot’’ and there it
is. a bonus! great, great work. thank you.–

Thanks for the kind words and glad you enjoyed it.

I assume you know that Ian is also the author of the published
reference work ‘The Complete Guide to Jaguar Collectibles’, part of
which covers the mascots? This was published a few years ago. It will
tell you almost anything you want to know about collecting everything
Jaguar except the cars themselves and it’s full of illustrations.
There’s currently a very low cost offer available via Ian’s website:

plus, rumour has it that the fabled next Postal Auction might not be
too far away at last after a very long delay. Ian, can it really be
true this time?

Hi Tony,

Yup, it really is!

Am in the final stages of cataloguing and there is another set of photos of
some of the more interesting lots ready to go up on the website.

I am always in the printer’s hand for the very last lap. I have a deal
whereby he fits me in between the bigger jobs. This costs a lot less, but
does mean that I have no control over the timings. However, he usually
manages to turn things round within two weeks.

The full text of the catalogue will go up on the website the day the paper
catalogue mails out.

I shall be posting up-dates on my website, along with more photos, so that’s
the best place to track things. Here’s the link:

And don’t forget, I’m a one-man band. So please keep an eye on the site,
rather than mailing me individually. This is not because I don’t enjoy
chatting with my friends and customers - I do. But while I’m chatting, I
ain’t cataloguing!

Best regards,
