[concours] air cleaner housing color

(Forwarded by admin - bounced due to HTML encoding)

Does anyone have any factual information on the correct color for the air
cleaner housing for a 1966 E-type FHC originally supplied to the USA?
Factual meaning official Jaguar Cars literature if possible. When I bought
the car in 1978 the housing was black and, I assumed, had not been changed
from new. However, I am beginning to suspect that it should be silver grey
on the 4.2 cars. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The JCNA E-type Seminar Bulletin dated March 3-6 1994, Page 43, I.P.9,
states “Air cleaner canister, latches and air manifold; hammertone
silver. Few early canisters only: black.”

I personally have a very early 4.2 OTS (10155) whose canister is black.

Alan,

I have a lot of old articles, books and magazines laying around that no doubt
have this info. I seem to recall a R&T reprint of a review on a 66 E fixed head
that has a silver canister. To the best of my knowledge, all the 3.8s were
black and 4.2s started going to silver around 1966, but were intermixed which
only adds to the confusion. I’ve seen a 69 coupe that was black and have no
doubt it was original. So, there apparently isn’t much rhyme or reason behind
this and trying to draw airtight conclusions isn’t pratical.

I can look for it if you still need the information or haven’t confirmed this
yet. Let me know. Until then, I’m going out in the garage where I can argue
with my radio console about whether it wants to fit in the car or not.
