[concours] air cleaner housing colour

Dick:

My research, includign photos of the Browns Lane assembly line, seems to indicate that
all 3.8l E-types, and most, if not all 4.2l E-types up until around the time they
switched to “series 1 1/2” had black air cleaner canisters. The only pre-1967 E-types
I have ever seen with hammertone silver canisters had had them resprayed that colour, and
the original, if known, had been black.

The JCNA E-type Seminar Bulletin dated March 3-6 1994, Page 43, I.P.9,
states “Air cleaner canister, latches and air manifold; hammertone
silver. Few early canisters only: black.”

I personally have a very early 4.2 OTS (10155) whose canister is black.

Cannot agree.

All 3.8 E-Types had Aircleaner canister painted Black.

And in respect to Dick Cavicke’s observation of very early left-hand drive
4.2 E-Type also being black, I would have otherwise said ALL 4.2 E-Types
were hammertone silver-grey. Certainly extremely early right hand drive
4.2 E-Types, car number 1006 and 1008 (note, at this stage they didn’t
have 1E prefix to Car #) were hammertone silver-grey.On the other hand I have seen several misinformed restorations repaint their Air-cleaner canister Black, having seen this being case for Series 1 E-Types (ie actually 3.8s). Still amazes me how many people, including some not particularly expert magazines seem to think a 4.2 (1964 - 1968) E-Type is a Series 1-1/2 thinking only the 3.8 is a Series 1. Is this part of the confusion? I am far, far from being an E-type authority but, just for the S&G factor, I
pulled out every book and magazine I could find which has E-type
illustrations. I have now looked at probably 25 SerI E-type pictures (3.8
and 4.2)…not a black air cleaner housing to be found.

Just my observation, for what it may be worth.

Doug,
My E type has a known history, and it has always had a black air cleaner.

Best, Mike Moore

Well, it just dawned on me that (through my E-type ignorance) may have
convoluted the issue. I was looking at, and referring to, the triangular
plenum to which the air filter housing attaches. Duh.

I’ll shut up now.
