[concours] Concours Digest V1 #110

Gerry, the orangey red is “Red”, not Carmen or Carmine Red. Did you say
you have a Heritage certificate for the car to confirm the colour? If not,
let me know and I will see what I can do. Regards, John Elmgreen

John,
I do not have a heritage certificate for my car.
I have read through Porter’s Original XK (1998). Charts indicate (S812644)
production date to be July '56. My title lists it as a 1957, that’s Ok.
I feel that the interior is original, Black through out. (I’ve owned the car
since about March of '61.) Unless this was special ordered paint, the Porter
charts indicate Carmine Red (foot note states “For USA market only”) and
interior color “?”.
Only other color with black interior was Dove Grey.
You may already have my other numbers but I’ll send anyway.

Body F12712
Gearbox JL35625MS
Did I also send you my paint sanding discovery? I hope you will might help
me understand this. I sanded a small area (2"dia.) on the left front wing
down to the bare metal. I was able to see a black color on the metal. The
next layer was a medium Brown covered by White and top coated the Red in
question. Best description comparison I’ve got is the “poppy red” on the
first Ford Mustangs.
My guess is that the car may have been White or Grey from the factory.
Thanks for any help that you may be able to provide.
