[concours] Mud shield color?

Good day all.

What is the “proper” color for the mud shields on a Series One (65)
E-Type? I have looked in the archives and found this same question but
no definitive answer. Are they painted gloss black or body color? I
think they would look better body color so there would not be a change
of color at the front of the outer sill, but I suspect that is not the
way Sir William built them. I am talking about the steel mud guard, not
the unpainted aluminum rock guard. (Which would also look better
painted.)

Thanks Much

Lauren

The mud shields are most definitely black. I did mine in semi-gloss powder
coat.

Lauren,

I bought my 66 FHC in 1978 and those parts did not appear to have been
repainted. The inner fender which bolts to the sill end plate was black
beneath the goop undercoating, and the aluminum undershields, torsion bar
shields, and radiator duct were black on both sides, although the paint
flaked off easily when I cleaned them.

Lauren,
Can’t speak for the '65 but my '67 is gloss black (and rust  And so
is the aluminum rock guards. There is no chance these things aren’t
original color. No engine room work had ever been done when I bought
the car and I’ve had it for 23 years.

Lauren,
I can’t speak to the mud guard color on a series I but FWIW on my 70
series II the mud guards were the body color and the aluminum guards were
black. Also after sandblasting and priming the mud guards, I applied 3M Body
Schutz to the wheel side of the guard before painting it. I also added a bit
of flex additive to the paint to better resist stone chipping.

Hello Lauren,

I have owned my 1965 OTS since 1969. The mud shields are black.
