[concours] Need info on 150 FHC

Listers:

I am new to this list.

My wife and I want to buy a 150 LHD FHC and I have been lurking on this
list and reading XK books for the past two months. I have also joined
the local club but my first meeting is this weekend.

As near as I can tell there were 3078 150 LHD FHC built. Duncan
Wherrett’s book states the automatic transmission was usually fitted as
standard on those cars (150s) shipped to the US. I have been looking
for “build” numbers on LHD FHC with Auto transmissions but have not yet
uncovered how many were built.

Anyone know how many were built?
Am I looking for a needle in the haystack?
Are the later automatic trannys better than the early ones?
Is there a swap out for another auto tranny that makes sense?
Are there articles some where that I should read?

Any help and direction would be appreciated by this newbie
Thanks

My wife and I want to buy a 150 LHD FHC

A personal favorite of mine…I covet them regularly…

I’m sure that someone here will know.

Am I looking for a needle in the haystack?

Yes, to a certain extent, but the FHCs are not as popular as the dropheads
and roadsters and I have noticed that there always seems to be one or two in
Hemmings so I don’t think availability will be as much of a problem as the
traveling you may have to do to get that one special car.

Are the later automatic trannys better than the early ones?

In spades…

Is there a swap out for another auto tranny that makes sense?

You’re hitting close to home with this one…my own personal quest/fantasy
is to get a 150 FHC that is in perfect shape and missing a drivetrain.

I want to stick a 4.2 tri-carb and a Borg Warner Model 12 in it, air
condition it with a stand alone unit so that I don’t defile the car, and run
the Carrera Panamericana with it.

So now I’m out of the closet…now if I can just find that winning lottery
ticket…

Are there articles some where that I should read?

Anything and everything that you can lay your hands on…after all, you
need to pass all of this on to your heirs…8>)

Hey, keep us posted on your progress and if you take the idea, run with it,
and do the Carrera thing let us know so that we can enjoy it
vicariously…8>)

Hello Jeb,

I'll be first to volunteer as navigator/riding mechanic/interpreter/money

launderer…but how are we going to beat those 500 hp Studebakers that keep
winning? How about a supercharged V-12 with a 4L80E ? If I can get The Bank
of England as a sponsor, we can go all the way and lump it with a Merlin V-12
and a 2 speed Powerglide. Can you say “Contact” ?

Paul

Hello,

According to Paul Skilleters “The Jaguar XKs” there were all together 674
FHCs with AT and 3,4l motor and 197 FHCs with AT and 3,8 l motor.
Unfortunately it doesnt say which were LHD and which RHD, but out of all
150 FHCs there were 1368 RHDs and 3094 LHDs.
