[concours] re: Computerized Judging solutions

greetings …

please excuse my abrupt entry into this domain … i know almost nothing
about concours events and judging … my MK VIIM is the car i drive daily
… it might be interesting to enter the car … and participate in one of
these events … i live in tucson, az., usa … the weather is nice here,
and the car is driven year-around … anyway …the reason for my post is
to ask if it wouldn’t be possible for the judges to use a cell-phone to
enter their information into the computer … for print-out etc. …
or is that a silly idea ? …
thanks …

I don’t think it is a silly idea. My first thought was that a smart
individual could figure out a way to use Palm Pilots (now that the recognize
handwriting pretty well) linked via WAP (the standard wireless protocol) to
a server (which we generally use computers to tabulate the over seventy
entries we get a year anyway, so no big change). A standard browser
interface for the car you are judging would be used as an entry vehicle to
the server.

It’s all doable, it is just a matter of 1) expense (many Palm VIIs with WAP
at about $500 a piece; and 2) the available free time of technical
professionals you’d need to pull this off. Alternatively, the Palms probably
could be swapped for cheaper cell phones, as long as they all had WAP
capability and someone wrote the right human interface.

If there were a way to do this on a national level and involve other car
clubs, perhaps it could be accomplished effectively.

That cell phone idea is intriguing, the tough part would be setting up the
interface for at the PC end. PDAs are probably more workable right now, but
as Steve says, expensive to implement. Another option would be some kind of
optical scanner where boxes are marked indicating scores and the deductions
are input directly into the computer for calculation. (I’d have suggested
punch cards before the recent events in Florida.)

At our concours 95% of the cars score above 90 (or 9) pts. Even the worst
cars have many more zero entries than non-zero. So I still think calculators
are the quickest solution that wouldn’t cost big bucks.

Junot, you need to get up here for the Saloons in the Old West Concours next
year. We always need the big cats!
