[concours] Re: Late Series 3 12's

Some things that may have lead to no 12’s after '88. With the new body -
XJ40 - Jag designed the engine box to only hold the long skinny six. They
did this, so goes the lore, to keep BMC from forcing them to stuff the
Rover V8 in the car. This kept the V12 out of the engine box. They probably
didn’t want to keep both totally different cars going to the dealers - too
many parts, which one was better, which one were they making money on… Or
possibly laws re emmissions and crash were changing which would require
upgrading the old car for very low production. I think '88 was when passive
restraints first came in - remember electric seat belts? Did '88 Jags have
them? Just some thoughts on the reasons we didn’t get these great cars.

The V12 engine was in Canadian Series III XJ cars from 1979 to 1992
inclusive, and in the XJS during that period. In fact, the Canadian market
had the V12 from the 1973 Series I XJ right up to the 94 xj40 (redesigned
to accept the V12), continuously, and of course the E-type had the V12.
I own a 1988 Series III V12. Glorious. The US market was definitely
underprivileged when it came to saloon models: No V12, no Sovereign Series
III (I also have one of those!).
