[concours] Re: Spammer - BULK EMAIL SERVICES

To all,

It’s decision time. We’ve been hit by a blatant spammer today. Most
(possibly all) the other jag-lover lists have implemented the policy where
you must be a list member to post to the list. This will prevent this type
of spamming. I have held off doing this until we got spammed because there
are some side affects which I will describe below. We also got hit today
with a ‘British car survey’ which was cross-posted to about 50 different
lists. Although “MGMagnette@aol.com” is a member of the XJ-S list he is
not a member of any of the others, therefore this ‘not so blatant, but
unwelcome’ spam would be prevented also. I don’t think I’d mind a survey
one time, but he’s promised to send us a survey on every other British car
made I believe.

One side affect is if you have two email addresses you will only be able to
send email from the one you used when you subscribed, i.e. the name
majordomo knows you by. This is often an issue for people who have a work
account and a home account (like me). A workaround to this is to
s
ubscribe to the ‘xk’ list with one account and the ‘xk-digest’ with the
other. This allows you to send email from either address. You can then
just delete the digests when they come in if you don’t want them.

Another side affect can occur for people who work for a large company and
the mail system does things like prepend the name of a server to your
address for out-going mail. You probably won’t know this is a problem
until your mail bounces. If this happens, please email me and we’ll try to
figure out what address will work.

Sorry to be so verbose but I wanted everyone to know there COULD be side
affects.

I’m looking for opinions. Do you want to put up with the spammers or do
you want me to ‘close’ the list. My recommendation is that I close it. I
don’t think there will be any side affects we can’t deal with and I think
the spamming will get more frequent over time.

Yes, in my opinion close the list. It seems to work well on the E-type list.
As to the survey, I don’t mind an ocasional survey if it is not commercial.

Personally, I thought the British car survey was spam. But I couldn’t readily
see what value the answers would have been to anyone trying to market anything.

I’d go ahead and close it.

Could you not do something at that server level that is like what can be
accomplished with “filters” on email programs? Several ideas were given in
the most recent MacWorld magazine.

Dear Dick

I support closing the list, who needs unwanted email messages, just
dealing with wanted ones takes enough time.

Where does the term Spam come from, in the British / Australian world it
is a form of canned processed meat.

Dick—Do what you think is best for the net. You are the expert, and I
