[concours] Side Mirrors

I have a 69 2+2 with side mirrors mounted on each door. Two questions. 1)
did this car come with two mirrors?. 2) the mirror heads are somewhat
different. Both are trapizoidal shaped with the four sides on the driver’s
side mirror being somewhat straight, giving a more squared appearance than the
the passenger side mirror which is more rounded. Both are brushed aluminum
backed on a chrome pot metal(?) base. Probably not the best discription but
short of faxing someone a tracing of the mirror it is the best I can do. Can
anyone tell me which, if either, is correct? I am having the car stripped
and repainted so this is the time to fill in the mounting holes for the
passenger side mirror if it shouldn’t be there. My goal is to keep/restore
the appearance to factory original, or at least original as it would have been
delivered by the dealer.

Also my heritage certificate lists no first owner, only a main distributor of
BL New York. is there any way to find out which dealer might have sold the car
and to whom? I am trying to trace ownership. I have worked back from 1997 to
1982 but have been unsuccessful at filling in the blanks from 1969 to 1982.
VIN is 1R40996. I suspect the car has been in the Houston, TX/ Louisiana area
since new.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

It doesn’t sound like the passenger side mirror is correct. By 1968, they were
generally putting trapazodial mirror with break away spring in it (British Auto
sells the correct one) on the drivers side. I don’t know if this was done by the
dealers or the factory (the dealers were responsible in Series 1, that I know). I
do not recall seeing the same mirror on a Series 2. Best bet is to check the parts
book for a Series 2 to see what the factory authorized and look through back
issues of car reviews for 1969 and ads. I’ve got a couple I can check.

Sounds to me like the right side mirror still has the original head and
the left side has a replacement “Tex” head. If you order a replacement
head, it will most likely look squared off like the left.

The catalogs I have list both right and left side mirrors with Jaguar
part numbers. My 70 OTS has only the left side mirror as it is LHD.
The mirror is the original factory mirror and has the rounded head. I
suspect RHD cars would have the right side mirror only.

I like to have mirrors on both sides to maintain a balanced look.

George and Steve: Thanks. Looking at the Brooklands Gold Portfolio, Page 145
and 148 it looks like I have the correct head (the rounded one) on the left
side. I also like the look of having mirrors on both doors, so I guess its is
back to the parts catalogues.

Thanks again.
