[concours] SU Carburetor Tags Correct Finish

I have a half-dozen of these tags made out of aluminum,
finished in a anodized green finish including the three
that come with my SI 4.2 E-Type when I purchased it many
years ago. I have seen many of these tags on SI E-Types,
but always in unfinished aluminum (no color), which I
believe you can get from Burlen. I have an inquire to them
about the correct original finish, but have not heard back
from them. Anybody have insight on this issue?

The JCNA Series 1 E-Type Judges Guide requires them, but
does not address the correct finish- unless I missed
something.–

Perhaps I’ve lived a sheltered life but in many years of looking at, judging, owning a few and, sorry to say, parting out a couple E-Types, I can’t recall seeing anything but a plain aluminum SU carburetor tag.

Hi Bob- Thanks for responding. I’ve tried to live a shelter
life without much luck. Interesting. I’ll take a couple of
photos of my tags and post.–

I had a Series 1 4.2 E Type in the late 60s and the tags were
definitely not anodised.–

Interesting, last Saturday at our RMJC Judges School,
another member mentioned that he had original anodized
green tags on his early E-Type- a '62 I believe. I’ll get
more info from him and post accordingly.–

Hi Tom,
I been trying to figure out what those tags are from, but I’m not totally certain whether they read AUC992 or AUC982. I would think that 992 is correct as according to my old SU Carburetter Manual AUC992 is from a 1960/2 3.8 Mk2 whereas AUC382 is from a 1963 Rover 3 litre coupe. I don’t believe it could be the latter as they only had one carb and your tags read F & B.

Bob- the tags in the posted photos read AUC992F and R. I
have three other green anodized tags from an E-Type that
read AUD227F,C & R.–

The AUD227’s are from a 4.2 E-Type. The green finish remains a mystery> I don’t understand why SU would anodized a few but not all.

I’ll do some more investigation on this issue and post
accordingly- may be awhile however. I will try and follow-
up with Burlen as well, who have not yet returned my
inquire.

Bob- what is your source for de-coding the tag numbers?–

Hi Tom,
The de-coding of the tags came from an old SU Carburetter Manual, more like a booklet, 3x7 or so, 192 pages, printed in 1972, that pretty much covers anything that you want to know relating to SU carbs, tuning, needle sizes, applications etc. I have no idea where or when I got it but it’s been well used over the years and shows it!

Hi Bob.
Out of interest does your book mention anything about dating SU
carbs based on any numbers from them?
Regards, Jordy.–

No, just what models were on the various cars. I wouldn’t be too surprised if copies of it pop up on ebay once in awhile.

More evidence of green carb tags as seen in color photos of
a SI-4.2 on page 94 and 97 of Anders Ditlev
Clausager’s ''Factory Origional Jaguar E-Type.–
