[concours] wax overspray

A question needing an authoritative answer. My 1988 Series 3 xj12 has a fair
amount of factory wax-injection overspray in the engine compartment, on the
bonnet underside, etc. I know that in non-Jaguar concours events this sort
of factory “splash” is considered not only normal, but desirable and often,
necessary. If you don’t have it, you lose points.

This stuff is very dificult to remove. Can anyone tell me what the JCNA
position is on this? (if there is a position?). I can find nothing on this
in the Rulebook.

Gregory,
I have been browsing through the JCNA rule book regarding your question and
as you say, there is no definitive answer there. I am a fairly new judge
without the benefit of years of experience but I think that, if you could
find some documentation that this is indeed a factory application, you would
be OK. I don’t know how you would get that, however, as I’ve never seen
anything from Jaguar which describes their rustproofing methods. Dealers
have been known to spray all kinds of stuff onto the undersides of brand new
cars in the name of rust prevention (don’t you hate that rubber
undercoating?). As I see it, the only deduction possible in this case is
“cleanliness”, and not even that, if you can prove that it was factory
applied. Of course, I haven’t seen your car but I think I would try taking
the bonnet off the car and laying it on a blanket on a table or saw horses up
side down. That way you can work more effectively and you might be able to
get a solvent like lacquer thinner (my favorite) to do the job. I struggled
to get the underside of my bonnet just right for a long time and finally took
it off last winter and had it media blasted and repainted. Drastic, I know,
but effective.
I shudder to think of competing against you with your v12 in the champion
division. It is a beautiful car from the pictures and I’m sure you’ll do
very well. Keep us posted.
Warmest regards,
John
