[concours] XKE Series 1.5 Roadster

Greetings,

Was wondering if all E-types had ashtrays in the center
console?
A friend has a car and is wondering whether the ashtray
was ‘‘deleted’’ during restoration.

Wouldn’t they also have deleted the Cigar lighter if that was
the case?–

Hello Bob,

Interesting, the post production cars as seen in factory
photographs show an ash tray next to the park brake, however the SI
production cars did not include ashtrays. Then when the SII cars
came out, ashtrays were added to the console. I don’t blieve the
early 1.5 cars had the ashtrays. For sure by 1969, the SII cars had
them. Haddock’s or Clausager’s book(s) may have more details. Best.–

All Series 1 E-types had an ashtray above the radio slot.
This remained true until the Federal mandated safety changes
caused the replacement of the toggle switch panel with a
modified rocker switch panel. It is possible that the
earliest so-called 1.5 models that still had the toggle
switch panels also had the ashtray above the radio slot.
Once the rocker switch panels were installed, the ashtray
was moved to the center console in front of the armrest.–

Tom, I don’t know why you think that the S1 E’s didn’t have an ash tray as they had three different versions that are all listed in either J30, J37 or spare parts bulletins. The IPL for the 1968 USA and non USA bound cars lists the starting vin numbers and the part numbers for the new style ash tray.
