Converting series 3 XJ6 4.2 to carburetors and regular distributor

Hello
I’m in the process of building a car in the spirit of a 1920-30’s Fraser Nash.
So far, I have a 1987 4.2 efi engine, a xk 140 type bell housing, a 133 tooth
Flywheel, all bolted to a t5 world class trans mission. Here are my questions.

  1. What intake manifolds will bolt up to my head, I prefer dual SU H8
Carbs, but will use triple su’s.
  2. What starter can I use with my bell housing/flywheel.
  3. I still have the original 4.2 efi type distributor, but no longer have
Any associated computer. What do I need to do to make this distributor
Work ? Or do I need to buy a Pertronix upgrade. I would be content
With a points distributor if someone can point me to a model of jag that
Has a conventional distributor that will interchange.

Attached is a photo of my current project, and another of
The inspiration car that I’m striving for. Thanks for your consideration
And suggestions. Regards. Dennis

One of our old members started with a pair of P100 headlights, drew the chassis on his workshop floor and built it up from there, it was fitted with a 4.2 but replaced it with a ‘period correct’ 3.4 to fit in with the racing class he was driving in.

  1. Any manifold/carb combination meant for later xk engine will be a direct fit, Dennis - with a bit of
work required with the carb linkages, of course.
  2. The 140 bell housing used an inertia starter - and I’m a bit in doubt as to the mesh of this and the
    engine’s original set-up. Others may have comments…?
  3. The original EI distributor will work perfectly with carbs - but require of course the AB14 ignition
amplifier. So will a Pertronix or any mechanical points distributor meant for the xk engine - they are
basically interchangeable as self contained units.

It sure seems like a worthy project, welcome on board!

Frank, thanks for your reply. If you look in the background of my project photo, you’ll see a 1932 ford roadster. It is powered by a 1952 Jag Mk7
Engine and TK5 transmission. So, I’m no stranger to jaguar, but that came
As a unit and my current situation is different insomuch that I started with
The 4.2 engine only and am making a Frankenstein set up.
Your amplifier suggestion is much appreciated. I’m trying to not invest
Too much to get this engine running, because I’m proceeding on the
Word from the seller that it’s a good engine. If it’s a good runner then
I’ll invest whatever necessary to make it what I want.
I’ll find an amplifier and proceed. Thanks

Thanks for the info Robin. Sounds like a worthy project.

As per your inspiration/Information, I looked on the fuel injection
Stuff I removed and found the AB14 amplifier. Thanks for the heads up.
