[DaimLan] Daimler 2.5 V8 Carb Dashpot plunger - vented or no?

Hello -
a minor point.

One of my carburettor dashpot plungers has a vented cap, the other
does not.
Which is correct for this car ?–

H.D. carburettors did not need vented damper caps and the 2.5 V8 is
no exception. The caps were vented to prevent a small air lock in
the damper chamber as the piston rises, the hole allows the
displaced air from the rising piston to vent rather than create
pressure and resistance to the piston rising.
The H.D. carburettor did away with the ,external ,vent hole with an
internal drilling from the piston damper chamber to the top of the
suction chamber to vent the air as the piston rises. This internal
drilling performed the same function and stops foreign matter from
entering/fouling the piston damper.
So,before you drill remove the damper and look down its hole for
the drilling just below the thread that retains the damper,if you
see the hole do not drill!..and check the part number on the
damper in the other carburettor…the correct damper part number
for these cars is AUC 8102–

Hello GNB, DR -

mine is a '63 model so 2.5 V8 rather than a 250 - would that make
the difference ?–

No the dash pot pistons should match up. However these cars have
been in many hands before we got them and doggy parts are not
uncommon to find. OTOH, since it is the piston inside the dash pot
and the dash pot oil viscosity that controls the pistons rise and
the large spring controls its return to the bridge. The only
adverse condition for the caps on the carbs would be if an unvented
bell was fitted with a unvented dash pot cap .—Cheers—GNB

P.S. Mine is a 1966 250 V8–
