Saloon-lovers,

Klaas Redder, who is a lister from the Netherlands, needs some advice: I’m
posting this on his behalf as he is not
confident posting in English.

Klaas has a Daimler V8 2.5l saloon. Oil accumulates in
the spark plug wells in the cylinder heads. What is the
best way to prevent this? Would this be cured with a
new camshaft cover gasket or is a sealant recommended?

Is there a common underlying cause such as distortion of
the camshaft covers?

Please reply to the list.

Thanks,
Ted

Ted,

On the Daimler at the bottom of each spark plug tube is a copper washer,
this normally lets oil from the head into the plug well. I bought some new
washers from David Manners, and used red Hermite on the bottom of the
washers and the tube thread. To remove the tubes with heads in place I used
a oil filter cloth wrench and the socket set. This grips the tube without
marking and leaves no burrs. After several thousand miles, the plug wells
have remained dry.

I also understand that silicon can be used.

Listers,
This seems to have been lost in the ether (as a copy
hasn’t come back to me) so I am sending a second copy. Enjoy.

Listers,
What short memories you have. It was not long ago, that
I introduced myself and told you about the V8 250 tools that I
had available for loan. One of these was the Sykes Pickavant
V8 250 plug tube removal tool. This consists of a threaded
split collet that screws down the tube thread and the collet
can then be closed to clamp the thread of the tube without
distorting and damaging it.
When I had my SP250, It would suffer from the oil leak
up the spark plug tubes periodically (about every two years and
the car was in daily use) and I would take out the tubes, remove
the copper washers underneath them, anneal the washers (heat
them to red heat) then refit them when they were cold. The
internal diameter of the washers is very close to the outside
diameter, so I had to be careful to ensure that they remained
central. The grooved washers that are now available sound like
an excellent idea, as they will make this operation so much
more simple.
I got tired of resealing the tubes every two years, so
I put red Hermatite on the lower threads on the last occasion
(as well as annealing the copper washers) and the seals lasted
another three years until I sold the car.
The tube removal tool allows you to apply much more
force onto the plug tubes without risking distortion and I
have to say that I did not have the tool when the resealing
process was only lasting two years. It is out on loan at the
moment, but I can get it back if anyone should need it. I ask
only for the cost of the postage and a large (returnable)
deposit.
