Has anyone improved the ride on this vintage. And, I don’t
mean replace the whole from a XJ40. Just some improvement
in the ride, which is quite lumpy, as compared to a say, XJ40!–

I rather like the ride and I own an XJ40 and an X308 too.
I don’t think you can do too much which keeping the beam axle at the back. Tinker with shock absorbers maybe. Fit new springs which are not collapsing with age perhaps.
I know it is very difficult to describe ride, but if you analysed it a bit maybe you would find there is a fault on your car perhaps.

with my mark 2 ( A Daimler) that its ride is much improved
with 3 or 4 persons on board , and thus its rather jiggly ride
1 person on board is clearly a function of spring rate . The
one relatively uncomplicated conversion which might improve it
is the coil spring conversion which CMC in England have done ,
but I have not personally tried one–
