I was checking the axle shaft and replacing the o-ring. Once it was on the bench I noticed that the bearing housing flange (facing differential) had a thin film of a silicon like substance, and when I removed the o-ring it also had the silicon adhering to it. After cleaning it up, its ready to receive new o-ring and go back in. Question is, since I never experienced a leak from the axle shafts, is the addition of a film of some type of high temperature resistant material a advisable re-assembly step?

Sounds like a bodge to me. I would think that a sealant here would be counterproductive.

Ok, o-ring only,no additional sealant.
