Differential speed sensor

Has anybody adapted an alternative diff speed sensor to the original Jag part. They are available but at silly money. Your thoughts Gentlemen.

I can’t recall anyone reporting one going bad. The black box that processes its signal, OTOH, seems to fail with alarming regularity.

mine went bad, but that was the older one at the TH400. It was about $110.

What is the year of your XJ-S?

Paul

Yeah, that older version for the TH400 went bad all the time.

OK, first question: Is this what the diff speed sensor looks like?

This is truly silly money, so I presume it’s the right part!

Gee, it looks like the sensors for the front wheels are the same price.

There are sensors that look kinda similiar, and at that price we’ll be looking to see if any of them can be adapted. Here are a couple:

Next question: Can we presume that the sensor must fit the diff cover in such a way as to prevent oil leakage? Is there an O-ring or gasket or something?

The one to fit a later model Jaguar also looks like a possibility:

Diff and ABS sensors are different (stating the obvious.) The diff sensor in my 89 looks like this.

Hard to tell in the pic but there is actually a small metal wedge or point protruding from the face. It’s not just flat plastic.

Yeah, but do they work any differently? When seeking a substitute, might an ABS sensor work? Or how about a crank or cam position sensor?

I do wonder if that little wedge thingy is important. I can’t recall seeing anything quite like that on any other sensor.

Who knows. As a refresher, here is what the sensor reads off of.

Although performing a similar job of counting pulses from a trigger wheel they may have different technologies inside - a simple coil transducer or a hall effect device. The diff speed sensor has a number of thin plastic shims, so getting the distance right between sensor and wheel is important. The ABS sensor doesn’t need this. Also the diff sensor requires an O ring to seal it into the diff cover. So nowhere near a direct replacement.
