[E-Type] 1008 Messages and Ivan

Hello to All,

We had power for several hours last Sunday night, 19 September, and I
received 1008 (one thousand eight) messages, of which 98% were Jaguar
related. This was the first time I was able to receive messages since
Tuesday, 14 September. We are in Fort Walton Beach, FL, USA, just a few
miles east of the eye wall of Ivan. Damage is absolutely catastrophic! We
survived, but we had damage - substantial to one house (seven trees down -
one on the house and water damage from rain - we are not in a flood zone) -
and shingles at the airport house. The wind and rain lasted for more than a
day and wind gusts at Eglin, AFB (5 miles away) were recorded at 122 MPH.

Power went out again for a few days and all food was ruined at both houses.
Cleanup, insurance estimates, and repairs will take some time. It looks
like a war zone.

I had four Jaguars outside, two under a carport and two in the open. Other
than covers being blown away, there was no damage to any of my six British
cars (five Jaguars and a Rolls Royce). I was quite surprised the rather
skimpy looking aluminum carport was not blown away. The 1965 E-Type OTS and
the RR were in the garage. The airplane was in a hangar and received no
damage.

As we listened to the battery radio, after Ivan made landfall, I knew it
was a bad hurricane when a newscaster broke into broadcasting and said “I
have good news. Sustained winds in Ivan are now down to 115 MPH.”

In reply to a message from DONALD HAWLEY sent Tue 21 Sep 2004:

Welcome back, Don!

Sorry to hear about all that damage and hardship - it was a brutual
storm. We’ve had a lot of that down here in Polk County with
Charley and Frances. We just had rain associated with Ivan.

I was lucky to be spared any serious damages here, just power
outage, downed trees, and the unnerving affect of being in the path
of so many. It seemed like every weekend and the devestation was
huge. There’s a lot of blue roofs around here now, waiting for
repair, and the plywood is still up in battle mode. One ‘‘sign’’
read:

  1. Charley
  2. Frances
  3. Ivan
  4. SALE!

Glad you (family) and the cars & plane are okay.–

Don,
Delighted to hear that nobody in your family was hurt. Secondly that the cars and plane were not hurt. It would have been wonderful if the houses weren’t damaged but two out of three aren’t bad! Good luck to you and all of the folks down there who had such damage.
