Hi,
I am swapping to a manual on my 67 2+2. I am planning
to go the T5 route and I’m collecting the neccessary
clutch parts (old parts anyone??). I have the
flywheel, pedal box and recently found a pressure
plate from a 3.8 on craigslist locally. I read you
must use the appropriate release bearing with the 3.8
pressure plate. Are there any other items I need to
consider? Is the Diaphram style spring a way better
design other than being simpler?
Also, has anyone ever modified a 3.8 or 4.2
bellhousing to function with a wc mustang t5? I’m
considering it… or dishing out 600 bucks for the
cast solution at 5speeds.–

A diaphram cover is a better design and I your flywheel may
not be drilled for the 3.8 cover–

Just changed from a 3.8 clutch and pressure plate (10’’
spring) to a 4.2 clutch and pressure plate (9.5’’
diaphragm). Had to have dowels made up and drill the 3.8
flywheel on a smaller PCD. The learned opinions on this
forum suggested that the later style clutch is more
progressive and might better suit SWMBO. You would also
have to ensure that all three elements match - bearing,
clutch and pressure plates are not interchangeable. Paul–

Ben,
Yes,the first T5 conversions used an XJ 6 auto bellhousing
with an alloy adapter plate and an aftermarket concentric
slave cylinder. Alignment is the issue. The bellhousing
dictates which starter must be used and that dictates
which flywheel you need. Take a look in the archives,
there is a lot about this conversion. The Mustang T5 puts
the shifter too far back and the OEM version of the T5
with the shifter up front was made for a 4 cylinder
engine. Fortunately, the hot rod people are all over this
and you can get all the parts to build a hybrid box or buy
a complete box. You still have to remove the input shaft
and have it ground to fit the pilot bearing. Have you
considered a Jaguar MOD gearbox ?
