[E-Type] 4.2 Head Gaskets

I have just installed a head gasket on my S1 4.2 & now I’m worried.
I gather the early & late 4.2s are different. I received a late 4.2
gasket & the supplier assured me it would work fine on my 66
engine. The water passage holes are smaller, I did not notice
a ‘‘top’’ mark & I recall extra stud holes at the flywheel end.~
Will this work fine or should I buy an early 4.2 gasket?
Thanks.

In reply to a message from Peter C sent Fri 20 Jan 2012:

The extra holes at the rear are water holes, not stud holes. There
is a top and bottom to these gaskets and if installed with the top
side up, they work really nicely. The different size holes are to
force more water circulation to the exhaust side.–

As I recall, the “extra” holes at the rear are for additional water passages. Since the water pump is in the front, the rear has additional holes to facilitate a more even passing of water volume.
