[E-Type] 4.2 series 2 no engine number

I have recently acquired a 1969 series 2 OTS. I have
searched all of the usual places for an engine number (above
oil filter, top left side on bell housing flange, front of
head) to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions where it
might be. The features of the engine look exactly correct
for month and year. Could this be a factory replacement
engine with no numbers - any advice appreciated.–

My bet—a factory replacement----that was what was in my 66.

In reply to a message from jwforden sent Tue 22 Apr 2014:

Engine numbers were not stsmped into heads from MY 1968.
The block will have a casting date on the intake side to
provide a clue. A few possibilities. A dealer replacement
block is one. Corrosion making the number hard to read
possibly another. If the engine is original, the engine
number will be stamped into the crankshaft flange and into
the edge of the flywheel. You can’t see the former absent
removing the sump but if you rotate the engine 180 degrees
from TDC you’ll probably be able to crawl beneath the car
and read the number through the covered peephole at the
bottom/front lip of the bell housing. If not there rotate
the engine gradually by degrees til you can see it. If no
number, then either a replacement flywheel or replacement
engine.–

You’ve looked in all the correct places so suspect it is a factory
replacement motor. I had one such unmarked motor and have heard of
others. It should have been on the bell housing flange on your car.

In reply to a message from paul spurlock sent Tue 22 Apr 2014:

Sorry Paul and Nick but the bell housing flange is possible
only in very late 69 cars. Jaguar issued Bulletin 1-A-13 on
1/15/1970 with the title of ‘‘Engine Number Locations’’
(sort of on point) which states in part that at the
following engine numbers the location has been revised to
the bell housing for easier access. ''The number is now
stamped on the crankcase bell housing flange on the LH side
adjacent to the oil dip stick.

XJ6 7L 5356
4.2 E type (Series II) 7R 6306
4.2 E type (Series II) 2+2 7R 38106

So a statement that all 1970 MY Series II cars would have
the number on the bell housing flange is accurate but for
1969 it is not.–

The number will be stamped on the edge of the bellhousing flange on
the left side of the engine, behind the dipstick. It’s hard to see,
and gets covered in engine gunk. Clean thoroughly and you’ll find it.

George,
IIRC it happened in July '69, nevertheless the OP had looked in all
the correct places for pre and post July '69 so looking for other
suggestions for which I had none. Someone else did suggest the
flywheel, I know they were on the earlier cars but thought that was
discontinued on later cars, am I wrong about that?
