[E-Type] 4.2 updated front seal

I see that XK’s Unlimited (and perhaps BA and others) offers a “special,
heavy duty Teflon/ Silicone” front crankshaft seal. Has anyone had anyone
experience with this and is it the preferred replacement over the two part
rope seal???

I have received advice from two different respected experts who say they’ve
seen no difference in the incidence of leaks from either seal type. FWIW, I
stuck to stock on my rebuild.

Terry Says,
John it’s unlikely you have a two piece asbestos Rope seal as it was used on
the very early XK engines.
You should have a Neoprene Rubber Seal at the front and a two piece Rope
Seal at rear.
The Seal you mention is fine it lasts a lot longer and can be used a couple
of times, that is the seal can be fitted the second time providing it is in
good order and not leaking.
It fits to the front

Hi John:

The regular front seal on your engine would have been the rubber kind, not
the rope.

I believe the Teflon seals I have seen require a little machine work on the
chain cover/oil pan before they can be installed. Not certain of that, but
I believe it to be the case.

The only advantage to the Teflon seal would be its long term durability. I
don’t think it will seal any better than the stock seal, properly
installed.

I used one of the updated seals and find that it does leak slightly…it was
also costly… Pete Willetts

Pete,
You need to put in a claim to your repairer, the seals do not leak if they
are installed correctly of course there must not be a Track where the seal
runs.
All new replacement parts have a warranty and or the repairer does
guarantee.
I have used those seals since 1991 they were originally mad by Dow Corning,
the Chinese imitations are Junk.

Hello Listers,

I’d support what Terry says about the Dow Corning timing cover seal.

Provided the running surface on the distance piece is smooth and not
grooved I have found it doesn’t leak.

Has anyone used a Spedi sleeve (or Redi sleeve) to successfully repair a
worn distance piece ?

I have used the Speedi-Sleeve twice now, and they worked just fine for me. I
must qualify that I haven’t even started my E Type engine yet-but my TR3 has
one in the front seal and it works well.
